CDPC, in conjunction with Primestor Development, Nadel Architects and KPRS Construction Services, created South Gate’s newest 400,000 square foot open air retail center and entertainment hub, Azalea Regional Shopping Center. Azalea is a Silver-LEED certified project and winner of the 2015 Los Angeles Business Journal Best Retail Project Silver Award. The name ‘Azalea’ was chosen by the residents based on South Gate’s symbol of the Azalea flower which was adopted back in 1965. This retail project is a family friendly, multi-generational, dynamic shopping experience providing the predominantly young Latino community with name brand retailers. The modern architecture and landscaping colors and textures create a blend that is cohesive and sophisticated. An impressive 900 square feet of living walls make up the largest installation on the West Coast and provides a harmonious transition from landscape to building. Landscape design elements include a recessed amphitheater with a pop jet fountain, a reflection pool, outdoor seating lounges and dining tables. Integrated lighting, sound, digital billboards and complimentary Wi-fi access also enhance the public spaces. The use of recycled materials and reclaimed water helped contribute toward U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification.
